RCR Resource Development Program - Round 1

ORI awarded 12 contracts to develop educational resources on the nine responsible conduct of research areas as well as related issues. The awardees included 10 universities and two commercial firms. These contracts support the development of multimedia education tools such as interactive web-education, videos, CD-ROMs, and classroom learning modules. Eleven projects have been completed; the other was cancelled.

Descriptions of the Projects

Research Integrity Training Program: Conflicts of Interest and Commitment Module

Cleveland State University

The project will develop CD-ROM-based training modules on conflict of interest. Each module will require the learner to complete a structured, 60 minute interactive course. Video and audio media will be used to guide learners through the materials. Specific topics covered in this project will include financial conflicts, state, federal laws, ethics, and general information regarding conflict of interest. Case examples will be included as part of the interactive experience.  Completed.

The Development of RCR Internet-based E-seminars on Mentor/Trainee Responsibilities and Conflict of Interest

Columbia University

This project will create two e-Seminar courses on mentorship and conflict of interest. These e-Seminar courses will be part of Columbia University's interactive learning site (http://ci.columbia.edu/ci/eseminars/). The courses will use an innovative problem-oriented case-based study approach to maximize learning capabilities via Internet. Interactive programming will allow student users to see various resolutions depending on decisions they make throughout the course.   Completed-Mentoring  ---  Completed-Conflict of Interest

Ethical Dilemmas in Research Integrity

The project will create an extensive Internet-based learning tool consisting of 200-250 scenarios which are likely to occur in the research setting. Approximately 20-30 scenarios will be created in each of the nine areas of the Responsible Conduct of Research. After completing each scenario, users will be posed with a few questions regarding the situation and given feedback from online mentors.  Completed

Contemporary Science, Values and Animal Subjects in Research

North Carolina State University

This project will develop web-based learning modules on the use of animals in research. The modules will familiarize researchers to biological needs of specific lab animals while educating researchers about rules and regulations regarding the use of animals. The final product will be a free-standing learning unit that can be easily used in classroom or online environments.  Completed

Avoiding Plagiarism, Self Plagiarism, and Other Questionable Writing Practices: A Guide to Ethical Writing

An instructional resource will be developed on the topic of responsible authorship. The learning material will address, in depth, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, the practice of paraphrasing, and other related issues in ethical writing. This resource will be available in a stand-alone paper-based format as well as an online educational resource.  Completed

A Documentary Film: A Round Table on Mentoring and Authorship

University of Alabama-Birmingham

This project will create a video on the topic of mentorship and authorship. The video will be limited to 30 minutes to maximize its use in a classroom setting. The video will consist of two segments. The first segment will contain a round table discussion among students on the topic of mentorship. The second segment will consist of interviews of faculty and students on mentorship and authorship. The project will be geared to promote discussion on these two topics of the Responsible Conduct of Research.  Completed

Web-Enhanced Curriculum for Responsible Authorship and Publication Practices

University of Maryland at Baltimore

A web-based learning tool will be created to educate the novice on responsible authorship. Specifically, the learning tool will address the determination of fair credit, responsible reporting of findings, and honest attribution of resources. The materials will be used and evaluated in a 2-day workshop. The final product will be available on the Internet as well as CD-ROM.

Module Development for the University of Michigan Program for the Education and Evaluation of Responsible Research and Scholarship (PEERRS)

University of Michigan

This project was funded to further develop a web-based program to provide education on the Responsible Conduct of Research. Learning modules on mentorship and publication practices will be created and incorporated into University of Michigan's PEERRS. Each module will contain approximately 20-30 web pages including scenarios and case studies. Interactive feedback will be provided to users based on their online decision making.  Completed

Completion, Pilot Testing and Refinement of a Learn Anytime, Anywhere Online RCR Course

This project was funded to help complete an ongoing project to produce an educaitonal course on the Responsible Conduct of Research. The project includes interactive, decision-tree case-studies which yield certificates upon completion. With the majority of materials already completed, this project will finalize the program by pilot-testing the materials and converting the materials to WebCT format.  Completed

Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarly Activity Web-Based Instructional Program

The project will develop an online learning tool to address the nine areas of the Responsible Conduct of Research as well as the management of hazardous materials and waste. The learning tool will use a combination of text, graphics, photos, and animations to enhance the learning experience. Formative and summative analysis will be performed to test the efficacy of the web-based program.  Completed

Faculty Guides for RCR Cases

The project will develop and evaluate a case-based learning tool on the nine areas of the Responsible Conduct of Research. The Internet-based program will educate research faculty in implementing RCR concepts into planning a research study, implementing a research study, and reporting research results.  Completed
