ORI found that Dr. Toni M. Brand, who was a graduate student in the Department of Human Oncology, UWM, and subsequently a research fellow in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, UCSF, engaged in research misconduct in research supported by U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) funds, specifically National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), NIH, National Center for Translational Sciences (NCATS), NIH, National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), NIH, and National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), NIH.
ORI has released its FY 2021 Annual Report, which highlights activities over the past year related to investigative oversight, communications, ORI’s grant program, ORI intramural projects, and ORI’s compliance programs.
ORI found that Hui (Herb) Bin Sun, Ph.D., formerly Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Radiation Oncology, AECM, engaged in research misconduct in research supported by U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) funds, specifically National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH.
ORI found that Daniel Leong, Ph.D., formerly a Research Technician, AECM, engaged in research misconduct in research misconduct in research supported by U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) funds, specifically National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH.
ORI found that Shuo Chen, Ph.D., formerly a postdoctoral researcher, Department of Physics, University of California, Berkeley (UCB), engaged in research misconduct in research reported in a grant application submitted for U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) funds, specifically National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH).
ORI found that Terry Magnuson, Ph.D., Kay M. & Van L. Weatherspoon Eminent Distinguished Professor, Department of Genetics, School of Medicine (SOM), UNC, engaged in research misconduct in research included in one (1) grant application for U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) funds, specifically National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In calendar year 2021 (CY21), ORI closed 93 cases. This includes 3 cases with research misconduct findings, 26 cases in which ORI declined to pursue (DTP), 12 cases without findings of research misconduct (no-misconduct), and 52 cases closed during the assessment or inquiry stage (accession closure).
