The purpose of this training is to promote an understanding of basic research concepts for new research staff.

Summary of how the scientific method is used to develop new knowledge and why it is important to follow a research plan.
- Research Design
A summary of how research is designed to gain new knowledge and the role of research support staff in enhancing research integrity.
- Elements of Research
An introduction to terms such as ‘variable,’ ‘random selection,’ and ‘random assignment,’ which are used in research studies.
- Methods of Information Collection
Emphasis on the importance of collecting data with precision.
- Handling Information
Emphasis on the importance of good data management and responsibly handling information collected in research.
This section includes definitions for the terms found in the text of this curriculum and additional terms that are relevant to the conduct of research.
