CONFIDENTIALITY
3. Collecting private information is even harder with people you know.

Think about it:

  • People can be embarrassed to tell the truth if they know you.
  • You might get information that is difficult to keep private.
  • Friends might pressure you to bend the rules so they can participate.

If you run into someone you know, be friendly, but think carefully before collecting data from them. Be sure the other person is comfortable with the research. Ask your co-workers and supervisor what to do if you are unsure.

Learn your project’s rules about recruiting or interviewing people you know.
