General Laboratory Safety

Radiation Safety

Use of sources of ionizing radiation in research must be approved by the Radiation Safety Office or the Environmental Health and Safety Department. State and federal regulations apply to the use of radioactive materials and machines. Typically each Principal Investigator (PI) will require approval to use radioactive materials or radiation machines as an Authorized User and the institution will maintain the Radioactive Materials License and any radiation machine registrations.

Most institutions are required to maintain a Radiation Safety Committee which provides oversight of the Radiation Safety Office for the review and approval of all uses of radioactive materials or radiation machines.

Work closely with the Radiation Safety Office (RSO) and the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) regarding any activities involving radioactive materials or radiation machines.
