Falsification is defined as "Manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record" (OSTP 2000).

Falsification includes, but is not limited to:

  • Omitting negative results from reports or manuscripts
  • Purposely altering data in order to obtain anticipated results
  • Purposely altering instruments to give incorrect readings
  • Misrepresenting your credentials or educational background
  • Misrepresenting your bibliography or the status of manuscripts
