Public outrage over the Life expose prompted Congress to pass the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 89-544, 1966). The act was amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985, and its standards finalized in 1991.

Commonly known as the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), this legislation currently governs the humane handling, care, treatment, and transportation of animals.
