Use of animals by humans for different purposes is a controversial topic. Philosophies on animal use include:
- Exploitation - the unfettered use of any animal for any reason
- Use - unregulated use to meet human needs
- Welfare - regulated use protecting animals from harm
- Rights - intrinsic rights for animals
- Liberation - complete abolition of animal use for any purpose (Orlans, 1993)
Advocates for both extremes are willing to break the law to advance their cause.
