A Ph.D. candidate seeks to understand the causes of juvenile delinquency. He believes family structure is more important than individual characteristics, such as cognitive ability or emotional intelligence. In the proposal, he designs a questionnaire that will be administered to several hundred youths who have committed a juvenile offense. He proposes to interview those youths admitting to an offense and describe the types of families from which they come. The research hypothesis is stated as:

Ho1: Juvenile delinquents come from broken families or families with minimum supervision of children.

His advisor rejects his proposal saying that the research cannot be justified given the investigator's design.
