PROFESSIONALISM
2. Maintain appropriate limits.

Gathering research data can be complicated. On the job, be kind and polite, but stick to business:

  • It is not OK to date research participants.
  • Do not give out personal information such as your address or phone number.
  • Do not give research participants rides in your car or get in their cars unless that is really part of your job.
  • If individuals ask for help beyond what your job allows, ask your supervisor how to direct that person to appropriate help.
  • Do not try to convince research participants to make lifestyle changes.
  • Your job is to do research, not to make friends.
  • You have a right to maintain your personal space when talking with research participants.
  • Learn your agency’s rules for appropriate behavior.
  • If your supervisor asks you to do something unprofessional, talk with him or her about it.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak up.
