Animal Subjects   Philosophies & Principles 1 of 13

Use of animals by humans for different purposes is a controversial topic. Philosophies on animal use include:

  • Exploitation - the unfettered use of any animal for any reason
  • Use - unregulated use to meet human needs
  • Welfare - regulated use protecting animals from harm
  • Rights - intrinsic rights for animals
  • Liberation - complete abolition of animal use for any purpose (Orlans, 1993)

Advocates for both extremes are willing to break the law to advance their cause.
