ORI funded 17 projects in the second round of the RCR Resource Development Program; two projects were subsequently cancelled. The awardees included 12 universities, 1 college, 2 hospitals, 1 professional association, and 1 commercial firm. The funded projects proposed to create innovative, multimedia education tools such as web-education, videos, online assessments, and other didactic materials.
Educating Staff in Community Agencies About Human Subjects Protection in Research

A web-based training tool will be developed for researchers to train individuals in community agencies about the use of human subjects in research. The materials will be targeted to low-income communities and will be available in English and Spanish. Specific issues covered will include assessing social, psychological, and legal risks; voluntary participation throughout a study; and maintaining confidentiality of research data. Completed
A Guidebook for Teaching Selected RCR Topics to Culturally Diverse Trainee Groups

This project will examine deficits in the training of international post-docs in the area of data management, research misconduct, and intellectual property. Research Integrity: A Novel Approach

A Novel-as-Text method of learning will be used to create scenarios similar to those experienced in real life in research settings. Continuous storylines will show the development over time of attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors that impact decisionmaking related to research integrity and professional conduct. Online quizzes, questions for discussion, and web links will also be provided. Pre- and post-tests will be performed to evaluate the efficacy of the Novel Approach.
An Online Competency-based Assessment and Self-study Program for the Responsible Conduct of Research

This project will create a web-based assessment of RCR knowledge. A multimedia self-study package will be created help users gain knowledge in deficient areas identified by the online assessment. The self-study package will include online reading materials, online case studies, videotaped case studies, and other video vignettes.
Health Research with Human Subjects: A Web-based Course on Making Responsible Decisions

This project will design an interactive web course consisting of case examples and questions that will augment existing programs to train researchers in human subjects protection. Selected-response questions, with response-based links tailored to subsequent pages, will accompany each case study to make possible sufficient consideration of the specifics and principles raised by each case. Educating Clinical Staff on Clinical Research Data

A web site will be developed to teach hospital clinical staff about the management of research data. The learning materials will allow clinical staff to distinguish the importance of medical documentation as research data, proper data collection methods as they apply to research, and the importance of protocol compliance on research data. Behavioral Health Research: An Ethics Case Compendium and Instructional Method

This project aims to fill a gap in the available training tools for the use of human subjects in behavior science. The project will produce a collection of ethics cases in behavioral health research, instructional materials to improve ethical decisionmaking, and a bibliography of ethics information. Development of Online Learning Courses for Fundamental Procedures for Working with Laboratory Mice

An interactive web course will be developed to train researchers on the handling of laboratory mice. Issues covered in this project will include advanced handling of mice such as intraoperative care and monitoring, blood collection, post operative care, anesthetics analgesics, and euthanasia. Development and Pilot Testing of a Comprehensive Assessment Tool for RCR

An online assessment will be developed to help institutions evaluate their current state of RCR and identify it as minimal, conventional, or ideal. Based on an extensive review, this project will attempt to identify the components of RCR policy that make up minimal, conventional, or ideal standards The online assessment will be made available through the ORI web site.
RCR for the Rest of Us

This project will create a CD-ROM to train researchers in the social sciences. The CD-ROM will contain video presentations and a graphically-appealing HTML interface to address issues in RCR as they pertain to non-biomedical research.
Improving Disclosure and Decisions on Conflicts of Interests: An E-Curriculum

This project will create two Internet courses on conflict of interest. The first course will be geared towards researchers, providing them with information on decisionmaking, managing conflicts of interest, and Federal and state regulations. The second course will be geared towards administrators such as COI committees and department chairs. The course will assist administrators in developing policies concerning the disclosure and the management of conflicts of interests. These courses will consist of case studies, FAQs, definitions, and links to regulations. Completed
Online Decision Instruction on Data Integrity

Development of a Web-Based Course on Conflicts of Interest in Research as a Prototype for Educational Interventions on Responsible Research Conduct

This project will develop an Internet-based education tool to help researchers increase skills to recognize, disclose, and manage research conflicts of interest. The project will use case-based pedagogy and require users to play the role of a Conflict of Interest Committee member developing a plan to address research conflicts arising from investigator and institutional financial interests. Information to support the user in developing the plan will include six streaming-video vignettes showing different constituencies / perspectives/concerns about the conflicts, and the vignettes will be accompanied by resource materials with relevant background information. Video Vignettes to Actively Foster the Mentor/Trainee Relationship and the Promotion of the Responsible Conduct of Research
