To
approve a research study, federal regulations require the IRB to determine
that eight criteria are met. Researchers must:
- Minimize
risks to subjects
- Balance
risks with anticipated benefits
- Select
subjects equitably
- Seek
informed consent where appropriate
- Document
informed consent where applicable
- Make
adequate provisions for monitoring data
- Make
adequate provisions to protect privacy
- Ensure
protections for those vulnerable to coercion
