To approve a research study, federal regulations require the IRB to determine that eight criteria are met. Researchers must:

  • Minimize risks to subjects
  • Balance risks with anticipated benefits
  • Select subjects equitably
  • Seek informed consent where appropriate
  • Document informed consent where applicable
  • Make adequate provisions for monitoring data
  • Make adequate provisions to protect privacy
  • Ensure protections for those vulnerable to coercion
