Activities
involving infectious agents and rDNA are assigned to a specific biosafety
level based on the potential hazards presented. There are four biosafety
levels recognized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National
Institutes of Health (NIH). Each of the four biosafety levels specifies
microbiological practices, laboratory facilities, and safety equipment.
The IBC may also prescribe special conditions, requirements,
and restrictions necessary for safe storage, handling, or transfer.
