Activities involving pathogenic microorganisms and human blood/body fluids and tissues (infectious agents) must be registered with and approved by the IBC prior to initiation of the activity. A pathogen is defined as any organism known or suspected to cause infection in humans, animals, insects, or plants.

Research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA) must be registered with and, if required, approved by the IBC prior to commencing.
