The Health Research Extension Act mandates that institutions abide by the USPHS Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (USPHS Policy - PDF document), and sign an Assurance committing them to operate according to the principles articulated in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide).
