Access to Data
Stewardship Responsibilities, page 2
Other types of administrative data are maintained by administrative and compliance offices both within departments and the central administration. Again, whether these offices are centralized or decentralized depends upon the general institutional structure. For instance, larger institutions may have more than one Institutional Review Board that exist within large departments or schools. Smaller institutions are more likely to have one central IRB that has responsibility for reviewing human participant research protocols for projects in all departments.
Below are some examples of how stewardship of how administrative data may be distributed. This list is representative only and is by no means exhaustive:
- Institutional Review Board
Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The committee established by the institution to review and approve research protocols involving the use of human participants.– human participant research protocols and approvals; - Institutional Animal Care and Use CommitteeInstitutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
The body that is charged with ensuring the proper care and welfare of animals involved in research. The IACUC reviews research to ensure that research methods are appropriate and comply with ethical and regulatory standards. The IACUC also has the responsibility to review periodically the condition of the animal facility(ies) as well as policies, procedures and operational functions of the facility and program. – animal research protocols and approvals; - Institutional Biosafety CommitteeInstitutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
An institutional committee created under the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules to review research involving recombinant DNA. The role of IBCs has evolved over time, and many committees also review other forms of research that entail biohazardous risks as part of their institutionally assigned responsibilities. (Source: NIH, Office of Biotechnology) – protocols involving rDNA or hazardous biological materials and approvals; - Office for Sponsored Programs – data and information related to subawards, project and budget approvals, and data related to effort reporting;
- Intellectual Property Office – data and information related to patents, licensing and compliance with sponsor requirements.
