Reporting Results of a Test of Association from Tabulated Data

Categorical data analysis, the study of association between variables measured at the nominal or ordinal level, requires the researcher to report and interpret not only the 'existence' of a relationship beyond what one would expect by chance, but also statistics that interpret the strength, direction, or pattern of the association in a substantive sense, quantifying those aspects. Especially in tables with many cells, there can be very particular associations involving only a subset of cells that account for the statistical association.
