Fabrication is defined as "Making up data or results and recording or reporting them" (OSTP 2000).

Examples of fabrication include, but are not limited to:

  • Faking experiments and/or results to validate or support a hypothesis
  • Creating responses from human subjects
  • Inflating results to support a grant proposal
  • Reporting anticipated results in advance of conducting the activity
