ORI funded 9 projects in the fourth round of the RCR Resource Development Program. The awardees included 6 universities, a medical school, a health science center, and a medical foundation.

Peer Review Tool - Sample Size Determination for Experimental Studies

This project is part of an effort to develop a comprehensive tool for peer reviewers. The proposed project will develop an interactive software tool to assist peer reviewers in determining sample size and statistical power. This stand-alone software tool will enhance decision-making skills and competencies of peer reviewers to judge the appropriateness of sample size and statistical power, thus improving the quality of the peer review process.

Promoting Responsible Peer Review and Publishing Through Interactive eLearning Experience

This project will develop online modules on peer review and publication practices. The modules will be based on the Kolb Learning Cycle and active learning principles. The modules will include both content and interactivity and will engage users through a variety of activities such as quizzes, games, cases, etc.  Peer Review   Authorship

Data Acquisition, Retention, Storage, Custody, Sharing, Ownership, Interpretation and Reporting

The proposed computer-based training (CBT) module will address the increasing complexity of data acquisition, retention, storage, custody, sharing, ownership, interpretation and reporting. The module will include relevant government regulations and sample policies/procedures, case study/scenario-based interactive exercises, a scored quiz with remediation capabilities, and assessment tools to evaluate the module. The goal is to create a high quality, interactive online learning module.

Utilizing Video Vignettes and Decision Tree Technology to Promote Responsible Conduct in Research Data Acquisition, Management, Sharing and Ownership

This project will address issues associated with data acquisition, management, sharing and ownership in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. The project will create about 10 video vignettes and web-based decision tree-style questions and responses to provide multiple perspectives on these issues. A user's manual will be created to guide the user through each of the scenarios and questions.

Lab Management: Training and Education for the Principal Investigator and Associated Technical Personnel

The purpose of this project is two-fold: First, the project will develop a web based curriculum delivery system that provides for user management, curriculum management, and certification management at a user level. Second, the project will develop a training and education curriculum for university faculty and key personnel related to laboratory management. This project will focus on five topic areas; 1) data/notebook management, 2) training/monitoring, 3) writing skills, 4) fiscal/administrative management, and 5) general safety training.

Development of a Web-Based Educational Intervention on Research Misconduct

This project will develop an innovative web-based educational intervention to help investigators and administrators acquire knowledge/skills to prevent, recognize, report, and manage research misconduct. The intervention will be developed by a multi-disciplinary team. The intervention will use case-based pedagogy and feature four cases on plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, and whistleblowers. The cases will be presented in video vignettes that are analyzed by experts in on-camera interviews, and the vignettes will be accompanied by resource materials. Online quizzes will be used to reinforce, assess and document learning, and the intervention will be SCORM compliant to promote reusability, interoperability, durability, and accessibility of content. Mentoring Relationships for Multi-cultural Populations

This project will address the roles that culture plays in mentor/mentee relationships by producing a website and a DVD product that presents 6-10 case studies that consider the impact of diverse cultural perspectives on those relationships. The product will contain directed discussions of these cases by faculty and graduate students, who will provide insight on the strengths and barriers of working in a multi-cultural academic environment. The website and DVD product will also contain "breakpoints" for the end-user to be able to respond to questions about the discussion, to be directed to further reading, to use decision-tree technology to proceed, and to carry out assignments and tests based on the material.

Development and Testing of a Web-based Tutorial for Program Evaluation of RCR Education

The goal of this project is to develop and test a web-based tutorial focusing on planning appropriate evaluation strategies for RCR educational programs. The tutorial is intended for faculty who design and implement RCR educational programs. The anticipated product for the user is an evaluation plan that incorporates the type of evaluation consistent with each RCR education goal; the data required to answer each evaluation question; and appropriate methods for data collection. Upon completion of the project, the contractor will provide a web-site for the research community to access the tutorial as well as provide the tutorial on CD-ROM.

Baseline RCR Testing Program

This project will provide a uniform, validated test of basic concepts and standards of RCR - first through access to online testing and then as printed and computer-recorded materials - to determine the baseline knowledge of students prior to the development and implementation of new RCR education programs. Additionally, the project will provide background and dirction on the development of this and other such tests of RCR knowledge, as well as comprehensive materials that will facilitate a quick transition to program development.
