ORI Announces Two Funding Opportunities
ORI has released two notice of funding opportunity announcements (NOFOs) for projects that advance the field of research integrity.
FY 2021 Notice of Funding Opportunity Announcements:
- Notice of Funding Opportunity: Considerations, Options, and Resources for Data Management in PHS Funded Research
Research institutions receiving funding from any of the HHS PHS agencies are required by 42 C.F.R. § 93.300(c) to “[f]oster a research environment that promotes the responsible conduct of research, research training, and activities related to that research or research training, discourages research misconduct, and deals promptly with allegations or evidence of possible research misconduct”. Core to ORI’s mission is the development and implementation of education and outreach activities that aid PHS-funded research institutions in their efforts “to teach the responsible conduct of research, promote research integrity, prevent research misconduct, and…to respond effectively to allegations of research misconduct” (65 F.R. 30600, 30601).
ORI’s Research on Research Integrity assistance program contributes to this mission by supporting projects that advance the evolving field of research integrity and build the knowledge base in research misconduct, research integrity, and prevention. Responsible management of data throughout the research lifecycle is key to ensuring the integrity, reliability, and availability of data acquired in connection with PHS-funded research. For this reason, for FY 2021, ORI has selected responsible data management as the focus area for research and resource/material/tool development activities supported by its assistance program.
This funding opportunity announcement solicits applications for projects that: 1) conduct research on responsible data management and stewardship approaches and practices; and, based on the results of this research, 2) develop practical approaches, considerations, and resources that can be directly implemented by researchers, research institutions, and research administrators.
The goal of this funding opportunity is to support the development of approaches and resources for data management and stewardship (which also includes data storage and retention of an array of data types) that will help enhance the integrity and reliability of data generated with Public Health Service (PHS) funds, ensure data acquired using PHS funds are available for subsequent use by the research community, and ensure data are available for examination should there be an issue related to the integrity, authenticity, reproducibility, and/or reliability of the research.
ORI anticipates funding one cooperative agreement award, in the form of a cooperative agreement, not to exceed $600,000 in total costs (direct plus indirect) over a two-year project period.
Opportunity Number: IR-ORI-21-001
Mechanism: Cooperative Agreement

- Notice of Funding Opportunity: Research on Research Integrity Conferences
ORI's Research on Research Integrity Conference Grant Program supports conferences and workshops that provide a mechanism for those concerned with research integrity to meet to discuss theoretical, empirical, research design, educational, legal, procedural, ethical, and other issues related to preventing research misconduct and promoting research integrity. The experts convened for these meetings are frequently from diverse areas of research, education, administration, law, and government.
This funding opportunity announcement solicits applications for projects to plan and implement conferences or workshops on research integrity and compliance with 42 C.F.R. Part 93. Virtual conferences and workshops will be eligible for funding.
Conferences or workshops supported by this initiative must be designed to provide a forum for discussion and produce tangible outcomes related to at least one of the following themes: 1) Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training; 2) fostering an environment that promotes research integrity; 3) prevention of research misconduct; 4) effective handling of research misconduct allegations; 5) whistleblowing and protection of whistleblowers; or, 6) other topics linked to research integrity and compliance with 42 C.F.R. Part 93.
ORI anticipates a total of $50,000 to support this initiative to award up to two grants.
