U.S. Office of Research Integrity Update: 09/2015

ORI’s FY 2015 grantees announced:

ORI at the 4th World Conference on Research Integrity

Division Directors Ms. Zoë Hammatt and Dr. Susan Garfinkel attended the 4th World Conference on Research Integrity in Rio de Janeiro from May 31 – June 3. They hosted a workshop on handling allegations of research misconduct in a global context, and participated in several other presentations and sessions.

Upcoming educational opportunities on human research protections:

The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) has two upcoming conferences this fall. The first, “Innovations in Research: Collaborations & Transformations,” will be held on Sept. 16th at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland; the second, “Getting through Human Research Reviews with Skill,” will be Oct. 14th at the NIH Regional Seminar in San Diego.

Research Misconduct Findings

Ryousuke Fujita
ORI found that Dr. Ryousuke Fujita engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and fabricating data that included in figures in the following two publications and one unpublished manuscript.

Teresita Briones
Teresita Briones intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data that were included in five publications and three grant applications.

Venkata J. Reddy
ORI found that Dr. Venkata J. Reddy intentionally and knowingly engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data that was provided to his mentor to include in grant application.

Ryan Asherin
ORI found that Ryan Asherin engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data that were included in the CDC research record, a manuscript submitted to JAMA Intern Med in January 2013, a published CDC report (CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report 61(09):157-162, March 2012), and presentations in 2012 to CDC and at the 11th Biennial Congress of the Anaerobe Society.

Julia Bitzegeio
ORI found that Dr. Julia Bitzegeio engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data that were included in one publication, two unfunded grant applications, and one unpublished manuscript. The respondent engaged in research misconduct in research supported by National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, grants R01 AI078788, R21 AI093255, and R37 AI064003.

Julie Masse
ORI found that the Julie Massè knowingly falsified and/or fabricated Western blot images and figures in research supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). 

David Anderson
ORI found that David Anderson engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data in the four  publications funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Brandi Blaylock
ORI found that respondent engaged in research misconduct by falsifying and/or fabricating data reported in two poster presentations, several laboratory meetings, and progress reports associated with NIDA, NIH, grant R01 DA012460.
