Before the mid-1600s, scientists communicated through correspondence, the exchange of findings, and private printing of results.

In 1665, the first scientific journals appeared and henceforth journal publication became central to the normative conduct of science. To ensure accuracy, accountability, and acceptability, submitted manuscripts were subjected to a pre-publication assessment. This was the basis for the establishment of a peer review process.
