Data Management   Data Management Responsiblities (cont.) 7 of 8
The federal government normally assigns ownership of data generated in activities that it funds to a grantee institution (i.e., UNH), not an individual (i.e., principal investigator).

In most situations, UNH owns research data generated by its faculty, staff, and students (see UNH.VI.F.6.5 for exceptions). UNH assigns custody of the research data that it owns to the faculty or staff principal investigator, or sponsoring principal investigator in the case of students, who is expected to discharge his/her custodial responsibilities in accordance with responsible data management practices.
