Potential conflicts of interest are those that may materialize into real conflicts of interest if certain events happen. For example, if a researcher is nominated
to a review panel that will review a proposal from the researcher’s
institution, the conflict of interest is potential until the point when
the researcher accepts the position wherein the conflict of interest becomes
real (Friedman, 1992).
