Issues regarding the sharing, custody, and ownership of data include are especially important in multi-institutional studies. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing general guidelines for how the data will be shared among the participants. This should be done early in the collaborative arrangement.
  • Negotiating issues as they arise. Collaborative researchers should understand that conditions may change during the study and be willing to discuss changes to the initial guidelines, if necessary.
