Authorship   Guiding Principles & Practices (cont.) 12 of 15

Honorary authorship (guest or gift authorship) occurs when an individual who did not make a substantial contribution to the work is listed as an author, such as a laboratory director whose sole contribution to the work was providing space.

Honorary authorship is strongly discouraged as it misrepresents the work of both the “honored” individual as well as the co-authors.
