Sample Paper Excerpt
A sociology professor was planning to conduct a scientific study to assess the substance abusing behaviors of college students. His grant proposal, which has been submitted to a funding agency, was prepared without the statistical consultation. The professor needed to estimate the sample size required to conduct the study and had estimated around 136 students to be enrolled in the study. The justification used for the estimated sample size was purely based on similar numbers used in other studies in this area of research.
The reviewer (a statistician) who is reading the proposal suggested that the professor needs to do power calculations for the planned study to determine the appropriate sample size rather than relying simply on information from prior (other) studies in this area.
