Therefore, he is not in a good position to make judgments about what it shows in a real world situation. If being invested in the successful outcome of one's work is a conflict of interest, then it is one that affects every serious researcher. It is the satisfaction of knowing that one has figured out some important truth that motivates most academics. The practice of peer review provides the opportunity for others who are knowledgeable in the field, and less invested in the project's outcome, to weigh in by attempting to replicate results. While the purpose of research is purely theoretical, the true test of most is the pragmatic test of how well the conclusions work in practical settings.
