Section Five: Animals in Research

CASE STUDY: Recovery and Multiple Use

Require that the animals be euthanized with an overdose of anesthetic after the trainees have completed their surgical task. The animals should not be allowed to regain consciousness or recover from the surgery.

This choice is ethically required. It is not in the animal's welfare to have the pain associated with recovery from surgery. Unless there is an educational or research need for the recovery, the animals should be euthanized without regaining consciousness.
