Research Misconduct Admissions Study
Diana Arsenieva, Ph.D., SME
Raju Tamot, Ph.D., ORISE Fellow

A great majority of the respondents against whom the ORI and/or their institutions make findings of research misconduct elect to either defend themselves or deny any responsibility for their action/s or refuse to communicate despite a preponderance of evidence against them. Nevertheless, some respondents admit to their research misconduct in various degrees and detail, and the ORI archive houses 58 closed case files containing such admissions. These case files are a unique resource, are information-rich with detailed and in-depth analysis, and are not available elsewhere. Currently, we are examining the dynamics of the research misconduct phenomenon as they naturally occurred and as they were narrated by the respondents.
